Dear applicant of the Mejan Residents' programme, |
Mejan residents is a one year programme that offers professional practitioners within the artistic field such as artists, architects, critics, curators, filmmakers and others, the opportunity to develop an artistic research project with a production budget of maximum 100 000 SEK per project.
While functioning within an educational setting, the Mejan residents’ programme is centred around an individual artistic research project together with a series of four seminars arranged throughout the year. The themes of the seminars are established in dialogue with the participants.
Within the framework of their own projects and budgets, Mejan residents may invite external speakers and subject specialists or initiate events if desired. There are also opportunities to join other lectures, seminars and workshops offered at the institution.
Mejan residents are provided with a shared office-type workspace and access to high standard technical workshops at the Royal Institute of Art’s premises on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm.
For each Mejan residents project, supervisory support will be given by a lecturer or professor at the institution.
Formal requirements include a public presentation of each research project at the Royal Institute of Art’s Research Week held in October 2012. At the end of the academic year, there will also be a public presentation and critique.
The Mejan residents programme comprises of 60 ECTS-credits (full-time mode) and qualify for Swedish study allowances (CSN). This is valid for Swedish citizens and persons who have moved to Sweden for other reasons than to study (more information).
The academic year will run: 4th of September 2012-7th of June 2013.
Mejan residents started in 2011 and forms part of the Royal Institute of Art’s emerging research environment. Currently, the school has three PhD candidates who aim for the artistic doctoral award (2) or a scientific PhD (1). There are also two researchers funded by the Swedish Research Council. Admission requirements
To be eligble the applicant must have completed a degree at an advanced level (like a Master’s degree), or in some other way have gained the equivalent experience either nationally or internationally.
Selection criteria
-The applicant should have gained qualified experiences within the artistic field.
-The research project should have a clear focus and offer a contribution of knowledge and insights to the artistic field.
-The research project should be clearly formulated and be of interest in relation to artistic research perspectives.
-The research project should be possible to complete within one academic year.
Application process:
For the academic year of 2012-2013, there are four Mejan residents places available. The application deadline is: 1 March 2012.

Please note that Sweden has introduced application- and tuition fees for citizens in countries outside the EU/EEA area and Switzerland.
Within the application, a detailed budget should be stated in SEK (Swedish currency). The budget must not cover living costs (private travel, food, rent etc) or your own wage. Please note that the Royal Institute of Art does not provide accommodation. Costs for travel will only be granted if the relevance is clearly formulated in the context of the research project. Funding cannot be used for investments costing 10 000 SEK or more, or with a writing-off period of 3 years or more. Please state material costs exclusive of VAT. For fees to cover for example, an invited speaker, please add 50% for social insurance fees. If needed, budget posts can be redistributed within the granted project context at a later point.
Each applicant has to write an individual application. In the event of a collaboration, each person must write an application and outline his/her role within the proposed project.
