Within the national framework of Konstnärliga forskarskolan, with Lund University as the host institution, the Royal Institute of Art has two PhD candidates who aim for the artistic doctoral award. The studies (240 ECTS-credits) are undertaken independently while in dialogue with supervisors. The credits cover obligatory and elective modules and the main part is focused on the documented artistic research project.

The Royal Institute of Art also a collaboration with the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences, Stockholm University. Collaborations also take place with PhD candidates at national and international institutions.
