To be eligble the applicant must have been awarded a degree at an advanced level (such as a Master), have achieved at least 240 ECTS-credits of which at least 60 ECTS-credits should have been completed at an advanced level, or in some other way have gained the equivalent experience either nationally or internationally.

The applicant should be well merited and have reached a high artistic level on his/her practice.

Selection criteria
The Board for Artistic Research and Artistic Development Work (KoFU) at the Royal Institute of Art, will consider the applicant’s artistic competence and ability to formulate and undertake a delimited and ambitious research project. Consideration will be given to the research topic that the applicant wishes to investigate as well as the quality of the proposed project and its feasibility. Emphasis is put on the applicant’s ability to communicate and reflect upon his/her work.

Doctoral programme and employment
The doctoral programme comprises of 240 ECTS-credits, which equals four years of full-time studies and leads to the award ”Doctor of Philosophy in Visual Art”. This is a Swedish doctoral award where emphasis is put on artistic practice and where the candidate is examined on a “documented artistic research project”.

The programme is divided between the compulsory participation in Konstnärliga forskarskolan’s semester meetings (two per academic year) and workshops (minumum two per academic year (totalling 30 ECTS-credits), elective modules (30 ECTS-credits), and the independently run documented artistic research project (180 ECTS-credits).

The PhD candidate will also take part in the Royal Institute of Art’s annual Artistic Research Week by holding presentations as the project unfolds.

Two supervisors will be identified in dialogue with the PhD candidate; the main supervisor will be a professor based at the Royal Institute of Art, while the second supervisor is external to the institution.

Within the framework of the doctoral position the doctoral programme can be combined with up to 20% teaching. A rate of 20% teaching equals 175 hours per semester and a total employment period of five years. If a lower teaching percentage is opted for, the total length of the employment period will be reduced accordingly. Teaching (studio visits, lectures, courses and workshops) will be planned in agreement with the Royal Institute of Art.

A work space and access to technical workshops are offered at the Royal Institute of Art’s premises on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm.

The advertised doctoral position is financed through a doctoral studentship (initial wage approx. 21 500 SEK per month). The PhD candidate is appointed for one year at a time. If the studies proceed at the expected rate, and depending on the agreed teaching percentage, an annual re-appointment will be made for a maximum of 5 years.

A fixed travel budget is allocated for covering the compulsory participation in Konstnärliga forskarskolan’s activtites which are arranged at different institutions in Sweden.

The autumn term will start on the 4th of September 2012.
