RESEARCH, SPACE AND SPECTACLE


arrow  The course starts from the district Kista-Rinkeby with a focus on making temporary public works in Kista-Rinkeby. Through the course and the works public art and public space is problematised and investigated.

In the public sphere the society is made visible, it is an arena in which political, social and economic power structures interact. By moving the artistic practice to a new context, in this case a specific part of Stockholm, the role of the artist and art becomes concretized and questioned.

By own practice and meetings with invited lecturing artists who directly or indirectly deal with social processes and public space as a parameter or a method in their work the course will give an awareness about the problems and the possibilities of public space.

The course tackles issues such as: How can you work site-specific and location-sensitive? Which complications and negotiations can occur while working in the public sphere? How can you as an artist participate in processes relating to urbanization and urban development? Can art take an active role in this process without being solely instrumental? What can art bring to the process of opinion formation? How can art contribute to social and cultural infrastructure that expands and produces public space?

The work, both theoretical and practical, will be summarized in a publication that is included as an active ongoing documentation-project throughout the course. The course will use social media in mediating work processes, as possible additions to the works and a way to gather material for the publication.

arrow  TIME PLAN
The course starts in October with an intense week when we work full time with field trips and lectures. The course runs until mid-April with a planned presentation of the works at 18 April. The last two weeks will be full-time production on location in Kista-Rinkeby. The time between these more intense weeks students work individually with their projects. Common meetings will be spread out regularly by about 2 days per month that consist of meetings, lectures and collaborative work with the exhibition.

We meet with artist Lisa Torell and look at her work: [ʃ] Sch / sh, The Politics of Public Space (2011 and I'm not talking about us, I'm talking about ordinary people, people in general (2004) and have a conversation about the shared, what we want to have in common and what we share and what we should share what we do not want to share, the public and private in public.
Visible and invisible rules to live and act, to move into the public domain. We grill three, four, we grill, we grill 5, we grill 400; private party, festival, sabotage or takeover?

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The student will after the course show proficiency in:

- Independently develop an artistic project in dialogue with the community.
- Use their artistic method to participate in, influence and be influenced by social processes.
- Problematize the tension between cultural autonomy and instrumentalized culture.
- Contribute to and participate in the process of a publication.

DESCRIPTION

The course tackles issues such as: What is it like to work in the public sphere? How can you work site-specific and location-sensitive? Which complications and negotiations can occur while working in the public sphere? How can you as an artist participate in processes relating to urbanization and urban development? Can art take an active role in this process without being solely instrumental? What are the limits, can art be an inexpensive way to conceal an unjust policy? What can art bring to the process of opinion formation? How can art contribute to social and cultural infrastructure that expands and produces public space?

The work, both theoretical and practical, will be summarized in a publication that is included as an active ongoing documentation projects throughout the course. The course will use social media in mediating processes of the works, as possible additions to the works and a way to gather material for the publication.

CONTENT
PRACTICE / This course will focus on students' actual projects where they receive individual support and feedback.
TALKS / Which opportunities and constraints has art as a communicative medium? Can social media be added to art in the public sphere to increase opportunities for interchange? This includes examining different types of communication. The course will use social media to both communicate the processes within the course and public, in a transparent process.
COLLOBORATIONE / How can the artistic process and the artwork be used as a method and location for meetings, identification, and conversation.
PUBLICATION / In collaboration with an editor and a designer produces the participants of the course a publication. It will serve as a documentation of the project and an archiving process.

SUBJECTS

- The district Kista-Rinkeby. Kista Science City and the "million programs" around the Järvafield. The so called "Järvalyftet" (lifting Järva) and the political processes concerning the transformation of the area and current research on these processes. In this subsection, we will meet with representatives from the field and Ester Barinaga, Associate professor , PhD Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy Copenhagen Business school

- What is public space? Lecture and discussion with Jonathan Metzger, Associate professor KTH, Stockholm

- Cultural autonomy and instrumentalized culture: Lecture and discussion with Maria Lind director of Tensta Konsthall.

- Social media as a means of communication and transparency in an artistic process. How can social media be used in efforts to publicize and discuss the artistic process so that public works and the process of the work becomes a platform and a foundation for open communication.

Joint work and exploration, with supervision by Åsa Andersson Broms Artist and lecturer KKH of Internet-based media

EXAMINATIONS AND TEACHING
Assessment is through active participation on the course, verbal and spatial presentations and seminars (in the text.) The web is a central place for communication. The student should, during the course make use of a closed blog as a kind of notebook where the collection of materials, texts, images, facts, audio clips can be collected and form a basis for a publication after completion of the course.

Johanna Gustafsson Fürst is an artist and employee at Kista Theatre and will supervising the course together with Åsa A Broms, Digital Media, Royal Institute of Art. Also from Royal Institute of Art Filippa Arias, senior lecturer in painting, will contribute with her knowledge and her experiences of working in the public space within the project.

Johanna Gustafsson Fürst is an artist, based in Stockholm.  Her practice consists of context-based and site-sensitive installations, which configure and stage the interplay between social situations and architectural structures. Her works deal with the confrontations between different aesthetics and social conventions. Gustafsson Fürst was a co-founder of the artist run gallery, ak28 and worked with the project between 2004 and 2008.  Since 2008 she collaborates with Kista Theatre, a platform for art and theatre, based in Kista-Rinkeby in Stockholm, where she has been developing projects which investigate theatre, urban planning and architecture. www.gustafssonfurst.se
